Joe Loya (Joe Loya Jr., born 1961 in East Los Angeles) is an American writer and former convicted bank robber. He grew up in Los Angeles and, from 1985, robbed banks in Southern California until he began a seven-year federal prison sentence at Lompoc.
In prison he built a friendship, by letter, with the author Richard Rodriguez. After his release in 1996 he began writing about prison life for Pacific News Service, first as a stringer and then as associate editor. His articles appeared in LA Weekly, The Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post.
His memoir, The Man Who Outgrew His Prison Cell: Confessions of a Bank Robber, was published by HarperCollins in 2005. He was profiled in the film Protagonist, his story was the basis for an episode of I Almost Got Away With It, and he worked with director Edgar Wright on Baby Driver (2017), advising on techniques and appearing in a small cameo. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area.
