This is for you if

Sound familiar?

  • 01

Your home address or phone number was posted.

  • 02

A photo or document that identifies you is circulating.

  • 03

Your employer or family has been named or contacted.

  • 04

Someone is sharing private messages or records.

How Reddit handles this

What actually decides the outcome.

01

This is the clearest rule on Reddit, so move quickly

Reddit Rule 3 says to respect the privacy of others: instigating harassment, for example by revealing someone's personal or confidential information, is not allowed. Personal information is the case type where Reddit's rule is clearest and where speed matters most, because the details are copied, quoted and screenshotted quickly.

Capture the post and comment permalinks first, report each one as personal information, and check edits, cross-posts and replies for the same details. Reddit removed posts for Rule 3 violations in response to legal requests in 2024, including two posts in Singapore for posting personal information.

02

Removing it from Google as well

Removing a Reddit post fixes the source, but the search result can linger until Google recrawls the page. Google has its own policy allowing removal from Search of certain personal information, such as addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, government ID numbers and bank or card numbers, and of doxxing content that combines contact details with threats or calls to harass. It can speed things up once the source is reported.

03

In the EU and UK

Where GDPR applies, Article 17 gives a right to erasure in defined circumstances, and the Google Spain ruling allows individuals to ask search engines to delist results that are inadequate, irrelevant or excessive. Both have exceptions for freedom of expression and for people with a role in public life, so they work best for genuinely private details, not for unwelcome commentary.

How we handle it

Our route, step by step.

  1. 01

    Act first

Personal information reports are prioritised. We file quickly and preserve the evidence.

  2. 02

    Report the content

Through Reddit's rules on non-consensual sharing of personal information, with the exact details flagged.

  3. 03

    Cover copies

The same details often appear in edits, reposts and screenshots. We search and report each.

  4. 04

    Reduce search exposure

Where the content appears in search results, we advise on the follow-on steps.

Every step is logged.

Each action on your case is recorded with its date. You can read the log at any time in your client portal, and reply to us there.

The rulebook

Reddit rules that apply.

Private information is treated as a serious violation. This is the rule the service is built on, with one that supports it.

  • Rule 3

    Respect the privacy of others

This is the rule the service is built on: sharing someone's private or confidential information to harass them is not allowed. A report shows what the information is, who it identifies and why it is private rather than public.

  • Rule 1

    Remember the human

Context that shows the details were posted to provoke harassment strengthens a report, because it connects the privacy rule to the harassment rule.

Paraphrased from the official Reddit Rules. Moderators also enforce each community's own rules, under Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct.

Legal background

The law behind it.

Privacy law gives people rights over their own data, and Google has its own process for removing personal contact details from search. Both can support a request to Reddit.

Platform policy · Google Search · Ongoing

Google Search policy: personal contact information and doxxing

Google lets people request removal from Search of certain personal information, such as addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, government ID numbers and bank or card numbers, and of doxxing content that combines contact details with threats or calls to harass.

Why it matters here: Removing a Reddit post fixes the source. Google's own tools can speed up removing the same personal details from search results.

Regulation · European Union and United Kingdom (UK GDPR) · 2018

GDPR Article 17: right to erasure

Individuals can ask a controller to erase personal data in set circumstances, for example when it is no longer necessary, consent is withdrawn, or it was unlawfully processed. Erasure does not apply where processing is necessary for freedom of expression and information, legal obligations or legal claims.

Why it matters here: A privacy route for personal data, but the freedom-of-expression exception means it does not turn unwelcome commentary into removable content.

Statute · California, United States · Ongoing

California Penal Code § 653.2: electronic harassment

Makes it a misdemeanour to electronically distribute, publish or post personal identifying information about another person, or harassing messages, with the intent to place that person in reasonable fear for their safety or the safety of their family.

Why it matters here: It is the state statute most often cited for doxxing in California. Legal routes are slow, so reporting the post to Reddit under its privacy rule is normally the first step.

2014: Reddit bans r/TheFappening after stolen celebrity photos spread

Type
Community-level action over copyright and privacy
Where
r/TheFappening
What happened
Stolen private photographs of celebrities were posted and shared in a subreddit that grew very quickly.
What was done
Reddit banned the community on September 7, 2014. It cited, among other reasons, the community's repeated attracting of valid DMCA notices.
Outcome
The subreddit was banned.
What it teaches
Copyright notices and privacy rules are among the fastest levers for removing private images. A community that repeatedly attracts valid notices can lose its place on the platform.

A false name on Reddit: the 2013 Boston Marathon misidentification

Type
False accusation of a private individual
Where
Reddit, April 2013
What happened
After the Boston Marathon bombing, users speculated about suspects online. A popular Reddit post falsely named Sunil Tripathi, a missing Brown University student. His family received abusive messages.
What was done
Reddit's general manager publicly apologised, saying activity on the site had "fueled online witch hunts and dangerous speculation" with "very negative consequences for innocent parties."
Outcome
Reddit itself acknowledged the harm.
What it teaches
Naming a private person as a suspect or wrongdoer, without proof, sits squarely within Reddit Rule 1 (harassment) and Rule 3 (privacy). Speed and evidence matter because false claims spread before they can be corrected.

The outcome

What success looks like.

  • 1

The details are taken down quickly

The post or comment is removed and reads "[removed]" or "Removed by Reddit's filters" where the private details used to be.

  • 2

    Copies are checked

We look for the same details reposted elsewhere on Reddit, and report those as well.

  • 3

Search results are a second step

Once the source is gone, Google can be asked to drop cached versions and snippets that still show it.

Before you do anything

Mistakes that make it harder.

  • Posting the details again to complain

Repeating them makes another copy. Describe the problem without the detail.

  • Waiting to "see if it blows over"

Private details spread fast. Early reports have less to chase.

  • Sharing the original broadly

Send evidence only to us and to Reddit. Wider sharing spreads what you want taken down.
